- Late goal by Deiber Caicedo put Colombia second in Group A
- USA qualify for Round of 16 as one of the best third-place teams
- Juan Penaloza had an assist and goal in the second half
Colombia recorded a 3-1 victory over USA in a hard-fought match that sees both teams go through from Group A at the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.
The result leaves both sides even on six points along with group winners Ghana and the Colombians claiming the tie-breaker based on the head-to-head result.
It was a disappointing development for the Stars and Stripes, who came into the match without having conceded a goal, but fell behind early on as Juan Vidal was quickest to a long throw into the box that wasn't properly cleared.
USA restored parity on 24 minutes after a super run and pass from Andrew Carleton set up George Acosta to finish in the box. Still topping the group at that stage, USA tried to hang on to the draw, but Colombia grew in strength as the match went on.
Thomas Gutierrez forced a fine save from goalkeeper Justin Garces on the hour mark, and then Juan Penaloza found the break-through with a finely taken free-kick seven minutes later.
Both teams went back and forth then, and it was Penaloza again who made the difference for the third goal, this time setting up Deiber Caicedo with a cross into the box in the 87th minute.
