Egypt scored four goals during their second appearance at the Confederations Cup in South Africa. They only picked up two points in 1999 and finished last in the group, but got their campaign off to a thrilling start against Brazil a decade later. The Pharaohs matched one of the best national teams in the world for much of the contest, as two goals from Mohamed Zidan and one from Mohamed Shawky looked to have given them a 3-3 draw going into additional time. However, the Seleção managed to grab victory in the last minute when Kaka scored a penalty.
The blow did not derail Egypt, who pulled off a massive shock in their next match and defeated the reigning world champions Italy 1-0, midfielder Mohamed Homos getting the only goal of his international career.
The last group stage game brought disappointment for the Egyptians, as their promising start was brought to a halt with a 3-0 defeat to USA. Once again, Egypt found themselves in last place, even though they were on level points as USA and Italy.
